Your Brain Already Knows Before You Do, and That Changes Everything About What "Psychic" Actually Means
Jul 31, 2026
There is a moment almost everyone has had. A name comes to mind right before the phone rings. A decision feels made before you can explain why. A wave of dread rolls through your body an hour before the bad news arrives. A mother knows her child is in danger before any signs of it. Most people file this under coincidence (I don't believe in this and made an entire YouTube video about it), or intuition, or "just a feeling," and move on without asking the obvious question, which is... where did that knowing actually come from, and why did it arrive before your thinking mind had anything to do with it.
Neuroscience has been quietly circling this question for decades, and the answer it keeps landing on is more radical than most spiritual teachers even realize. Your conscious mind is not where a thought begins. It is where a thought is finally noticed, well after the body has already started responding to it.
The Experiment That Started It
In the 1980s, neuroscientist Benjamin Libet ran an experiment that has been debated in labs and philosophy departments ever since. He asked people to sit in front of a clock-like timer, wired up to an EEG, and simply flex a finger whenever they felt the urge, noting the exact moment they became consciously aware of the intention to move.
What Libet found was that a measurable buildup of electrical activity in the brain, what's called the readiness potential, appeared several hundred milliseconds before the person reported being aware they had decided to act. The body was already organizing the movement before the conscious mind had claimed the decision as its own.
This unsettled a lot of people, because it seemed to suggest free will was an illusion, that we are only narrating decisions after our biology already made them. But Libet himself didn't read it that way. He proposed that consciousness still has a role, just not the one we assumed. He called it the power of veto, or "free won't." The impulse originates below awareness, and the conscious mind's job is to let it through, shape it, or stop it. Ok, so in layman's terms, please lol? Awareness isn't the author, or creator, of the thought, but instead it is the gate.
Eleven Seconds Ahead
Decades later, researchers at UNSW's Future Minds Lab, led by Professor Joel Pearson, pushed this even further. Using fMRI, they asked participants to freely choose between two simple visual patterns and then imagine them. The researchers could predict which pattern a person would choose, and how vividly they'd experience it, up to eleven seconds before the person consciously made the choice.
Eleven seconds is a long time in the life of a thought. And the brain activity that gave the choice away wasn't confined to the "thinking" parts of the brain. It showed up in visual and subcortical structures too, the older, more automatic architecture most people never think about at all. Pearson's team described it as pre-existing, non-conscious activity acting almost like a hallucination on standby, waiting to be selected the moment a choice was called for.
Read plainly, both studies are saying the same thing from two different angles. Information, impulse, and inclination are already alive in the body well before the conscious mind steps in to say "I decided this." What we call a thought is often closer to a report than an origin.
Why This Isn't a Metaphor, It's Your Actual Biology
This is exactly the terrain your my lives in, and it's worth being precise about what the science does and doesn't hand you. Libet and Pearson's research isn't a study of psychic ability, and it isn't evidence of the quantum field. What it hands you is something arguably more useful for building a framework people can trust: rigorous, peer reviewed confirmation that the felt experience of "knowing before I can explain it" has a real biological basis. The body registers and processes information long before the analytical mind arrives to take credit.
That is the entire architecture of what people call intuition, or a hit, or a pull toward something they can't yet justify. It isn't mystical interference from outside the body. It's the body doing what it has always done, receiving, processing, and organizing information ahead of conscious narration, the same mechanism Libet mapped with an EEG and Pearson mapped with an fMRI. The nervous system, the vagus nerve regulating the state the body is in, and the thymus and pineal gland involved in the deeper signaling most people were never taught to notice, are the biological systems underneath what's being called, in a much more limited and dogma-heavy way, "psychic."
This is why the word "ability" matters more than "gift" in how this gets talked about. A gift implies a small number of people were handed something rare. An ability implies a function every nervous system already has, some more regulated and available than others, but never reserved for the few.
Why the Gate Slams Shut
If Libet is right that consciousness functions as a veto, and Pearson's data suggests the body is already forming impulses long before the mind weighs in, then the real question isn't whether people are receiving information ahead of conscious thought. Everyone is, constantly. The real question is whether the gate is open enough to let it through and trusted enough to act on.
This is where nervous system regulation stops being a wellness buzzword and becomes the actual mechanism. A dysregulated nervous system, one running on threat detection, is a gate built to stay shut. Information still arrives, the same way the readiness potential still builds before a finger moves, but a body in survival mode doesn't have the safety margin to notice it, sit with it, or trust it. It gets buried under noise, or dismissed the second it surfaces, because fear is, biologically, a system optimized to override anything that isn't an immediate threat.
That is why so many people say the same thing when they try to trust their own knowing: it doesn't feel safe to. Not because the information isn't there. Because the gate was trained, often for good reason, to stay closed. You were programed to fear your psychic and intuitive thoughts so that gate is doing it's job.
A Word Built on Top of Fear
It's worth sitting with the word "psychic" itself for a moment, because words carry the history of how a culture decided to treat something. It entered English in the 1800s, rising alongside the spiritualist movement, at the exact moment an increasingly confident scientific establishment was drawing hard lines around what counted as legitimate knowledge and what didn't. The word psychic became a container for everything that establishment wanted kept at arm's length, and it has carried that stigma, and the baggage of fraud, spectacle, and dismissal, ever since. Somewhere in that history, an ordinary biological function got rebranded as people being charlatans, and the fear response to it got baked into the language itself.
None of that changes what the body is actually doing. It changes how safe people feel admitting they're doing it.
Where This Leads
This is the exact guidance my book walks through in full, Your Body Is the Channel: What No One Told You About Psychic Ability, and the Biology That Explains It. The neuroscience of preconscious processing, the nervous system's role as the gate between signal and awareness, and the biology, vagus nerve, thymus, pineal gland, biophotonic coherence, that make this a bodily function rather than a rare gift handed to a select few. No crystals, no external tools, no activations required, because the system was never missing. It was regulated or it wasn't.
For anyone who reads that and wants to go further than reading about it, into actually restoring the connection between the body's signal and the conscious mind that's meant to receive it, that's the work inside The Unblocked Intuitive™. Not learning a new skill from scratch, but recognizing and regulating what the body has been doing all along.
